Mumbai's Chilly Spell Raises Health Concerns Amidst Weather Variations

Mumbai, a city known for its warmth, has been caught off guard by an unexpected drop in temperature since Saturday, sending a shiver down the spine of its residents. According to the weather department, this cool breeze is set to linger for the next two days, heightening health concerns amidst the sudden weather shift.

Sunil Kamble, the esteemed head of the regional meteorological centre in Mumbai, shed light on the unusual weather pattern, stating, "Mumbai has been graced with pleasant temperatures over the past two days, courtesy of northerly and westerly winds. However, we anticipate a further drop, with temperatures plummeting to a chilly 18-20°C in the coming days. The westerly winds, though, bring a silver lining by improving the air quality in Mumbai. Yet, the stark temperature contrast, especially for our senior citizens, may pose health risks, as temperatures can soar up to 30°C."

The sudden dip in Mumbai's mercury levels has sparked a flurry of health concerns among its populace. Dr. Gautam Bhansali, a revered consultant physician at Bombay Hospital, shared alarming insights into the health repercussions of this weather anomaly. "A staggering 30 to 40 per cent of my patients are grappling with respiratory issues," he revealed. "Initially presenting with symptoms of sore throat, cold, flu, and cough, patients find temporary relief with medication. However, a recurring trend emerges in the third week, with patients returning with persistent cough and phlegm problems."

Dr. Bhansali identified two primary culprits behind this concerning trend: fluctuating weather conditions and compromised immunity. To combat this looming health crisis, he advocated for proactive measures. "Individuals with compromised immunity should prioritize wearing masks, steer clear of construction sites rife with dust and dirt, and abstain from consuming cold beverages or lingering in air-conditioned environments immediately upon entering indoor spaces."

As Mumbai braces itself for the prolonged chill, it stands at a crossroads where proactive health measures and weather resilience intertwine, underscoring the delicate balance between human well-being and the unpredictability of nature.
